Die Antwoord, 'Ten$ion'
What a roller-coaster ride it’s been for Die Antwoord, the South African “rap-rave” crew led by a pair of scrawny rapper/singers named Ninja and Yo-Landi Vi$$er. After becoming a worldwide sensation in early 2010 with the viral success of their hilarious and eye-popping videos, the group signed to Interscope Records (home to Lady Gaga and Eminem) and appeared to be on the fast track to becoming the world’s weirdest hip-hop superstars. Ultimately, however, they were probably a little too weird for mainstream success. They’ve since parted ways with Interscope and are releasing this sophomore set through their own ZEF Records. Lead single “I Fink U Freeky” finds the group in full-on electro-rave mode, although what the rest of the record has in store for fans is anyone’s guess. –AH
