Carlos Jones is an icon on the reggae scene in Cleveland. After a hectic 2008—Carlos turned 50 and also celebrated 30 years as a performer—he was finally able to settle down and create a second album with the P.L.U.S. (the Peace Love Unity Syndicate) Band. They keep a very busy schedule, performing at clubs, private events and festivals every single weekend. No one can put it better than Carlos. When asked about his plans for the future, Carlos replied, "As long as I am able to continue to do what I love, what more could you want out of life?"
Where was your first performance in Cleveland?
Actually at Public Hall. It was a long time ago in 1984; We opened up for The Clash. That was with First Light.
Where is your favorite place to perform in Cleveland?
I am kind of partial to the Barking Spider. That’s a cool spot. It has such an organic and intimate feel. It has maintained its integrity, it's all about the music. The people come there to appreciate music. They give you their full attention. Basically the audience is right in your lap because the place is so small. There is no stage, just line up against the wall and everybody is right there. When that energy is happening, it's just beautiful.
You are releasing your second full-length CD. Can fans expect a big change from "Roots with Culture?"
Well we are the same band; It might be a little tighter. People know what to expect from us. It's just more of the same good stuff that we are known for. I don't think they will see lots of stylistic changes except for maybe one song that draws more on funk and R&B than reggae. People know that we are all over the map.
Your music is featured in two movies, 'North Star' and 'Surfer Dude.' What is that like?
I am very proud of this. I would say 'North Star' more so than 'Surfer Dude.' 'North Star' was made by a local guy and someone that I had a personal relationship with, so it meant a lot that he wanted to use my music in his movie. It is a really good movie.
What is your favorite thing about being a musician in Cleveland?
The loyalty that you get from fans and the love and appreciation that everyone has shown me over the years, you can't beat it.
What is your favorite restaurant or bar in Cleveland?
Shooters is really good. One more would have to be Fat Fish Blue.
