'Glory' (1989)
Perhaps the best film ever made about the Civil War. The story is based on the acts of valor by the 54th Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first formal U.S. Army unit composed entirely of African-American men. Gorgeous cinematography and a stellar cast anchored by Denzel Washington (who won the best supporting actor Oscar) and Morgan Freeman add to the power of this rousing and deeply moving tale directed by Ed Zwick.
