Veggie U Food + Wine Celebration
The 9th annual Veggie U Food + Wine Celebration was a showcase of farm-to-table foods that squarely places the table on the farm. Nestled on a gorgeous patch in Milan, the Culinary Vegetable Institute snuggles into lush herb gardens, stripes of brightly-hued flowers and a whole field of oregano grown for Chipotle.
Billowing out of the tents in the back were the scrumptious smells and grille smoke. Inside, more than 30 chef-tasting stations and a dozen wine tables offered everything from artisan cheeses, local sweet wines and gourmet organic ice cream.
Taking a break from the eating orgy, attendees were treated to cooking demonstrations, wine classes, chef competitions and auctions. Celebrity chef headliners included Serafin Alvarado, Govind Armstrong, Jeni Britton Bauer, Steve Ells, Amanda Freitag, Jonathon Sawyer, Aaron Sanchez, Lee Anne Wong, Ruth Reichl and Billy Harris.
The event benefits the Earth-To-Table science program, providing curriculum kits to 4th grade and special needs classes throughout Ohio and 25 other states. These kits are designed to teach children the importance of nutrient-rich foods and sustainable agriculture.
